JOURNEYâS END
âHi Lady Diamond, I bet you thought Iâd forgotten all about you.â
Patsy and the others had decided to take a walk around the grounds to assess the damage, and so they could talk between themselves before their afternoon meeting with the Milieu. Karen had made the call and told them her partner was here to talk things through and it seemed they were just as eager to talk.
Now hearing Freddieâs voice made her panic. She thought to herself that he would only call her if something had gone wrong. Excusing herself, she walked away from the others.
âFreddie! Whatâs wrong? Have you found Nancy? Do you know where they are staying?â Her heart was beating in her chest.
âCalm down Lady Diamond.â His easy nonchalant drawl annoyed her. âWe have been with your daughter every step of the way.â Freddieâs voice seemed offhand and easy-going as they spoke which irritated Patsy even more. This was the most important thing in her life, and he was taking it all in his stride.
âWell, whatâs happening? What are you going to do?â
âWell, thatâs up to you and the reason why Iâm calling. Do you want your daughter and parents bringing to that chateau or do you want them all put safely on an aeroplane home? It will be today, because we have other commitments.â
Patsyâs first impulse was to say bring them to the chateau, but there were things to sort out here and she didnât want her parents and Nancy dragged into it. âTake them home. Or rather see that they get home. Today you say?â
âYes lady, weâre on it. Just a couple of things to clear up first. Karenâs brother is in charge of things here. Did James show you the photo? I know you know who he is and I wondered what you wanted doing with him?â
âI want him to know that it was me who sent you to him. I want his side of the story and then I want him tortured and killed. I also want proof that you have done this. Itâs not that I donât believe you,â she stammered, not wanting to upset him, âI just want the satisfaction.â
âFine with me Lady Diamond. Now, you do your bit and smash this phone up as soon as we have finished this conversation.â
âBut how will you contact me?â Patsy felt her stomach churning.
âIâll find you lady; now do as I say.â
The slow drawl of his voice didnât convince her, but she decided to go along with his plans. As an afterthought, she asked, âFreddie, just a thought. Have you ever heard of the Milieu gang?â
âMilieu? Why do you ask?â Now Freddie sounded cautious. He obviously wasnât expecting this.
âI have a meeting with them this afternoon. They are involved in this in some way. They are causing all kinds of problems apparently.â
âI know them, and what you say sounds about right. Youâre having a meeting with them? Well good luck with that. When you get there, say hello to Charles; we used to do some work together; that should grease your path a little.
